About The Leatherworking Course

What will I learn on a leatherworking course?

Diamond Awl leatherwork courses provide practical, hands-on tuition in traditional leathercraft techniques. Depending on the course you choose, you can learn skills including leather cutting, preparing and joining pieces, hand stitching, edge finishing and the correct use of traditional leatherworking tools. View our courses here.

Do I need any previous leatherworking experience?

No. Our leatherworking courses are suitable for beginners, with instruction provided throughout the process. If you already have some experience, the longer courses and individual tuition also provide an opportunity to develop and refine your existing leathercraft skills.

Which leatherworking course is best for a beginner?

Our shorter leatherworking courses are an excellent introduction for beginners who want to learn the fundamentals of working with leather. For those who want more time to practise techniques and develop their skills, our longer courses provide a more in-depth learning experience.

How long are your leatherworking courses?

Diamond Awl offer a range of courses from one day to seven day workshops, allowing you to choose an experience that suits your interests and the amount of time you have available. Longer courses allow more time to practise techniques and develop greater confidence in leathercraft.

What do I make on a leatherworking course?

The project you make depends on the course you choose. Each Diamond Awl leatherworking course is designed around practical leatherworking, allowing you to apply the techniques you learn while creating a finished leather item to take home.

Are leatherworking course gift vouchers a good gift?

A leatherworking course gift voucher is an ideal gift for someone who enjoys making things, learning practical skills or trying a creative experience. Rather than giving a finished product, you are giving them the opportunity to learn leathercraft and create something themselves.

How do I redeem a Diamond Awl gift voucher?

Once you purchase a Diamond Awl Leather Course gift voucher, you’ll receive a personalised PDF via email. The recipient can then use their unique code to book a course at their convenience using our online booking system.

What Is Included in the Leatherworking Courses?

Are tools and materials provided on the leatherworking courses?

Yes. Diamond Awl provides use of tools and materials required for the course, so you can concentrate on learning the techniques and making your project.

What type of leather do you use on your leatherworking courses?

At Diamond Awl, we use high-quality vegetable-tanned leather on all of our leatherworking courses. Vegetable-tanned leather is a traditional material that is particularly well suited to hand leathercraft, allowing you to learn and practise techniques such as cutting, stitching, edge finishing and shaping. Working with vegetable-tanned leather also gives you the opportunity to understand how the leather responds to different tools and techniques as you develop your leatherworking skills.

Will I be able to continue leatherworking at home after the course?

Yes. Our courses are designed to give you practical skills and an understanding of leatherworking techniques that you can continue to practise after leaving the workshop.  At the end of the course you receive a Diamond Awl leather hand book, packed with information including leather  and hardware suppliers, and a list of tools used on the course with links where you can buy them.
